Having a security alarm system may decreases the chances of a burglary. Even if the alarm system does not keep a burglar from breaking in, it may cause the burglar to stay a shorter amount of time. Most systems rely on a combination of contacts placed at doors and windows and motion sensors. It is best that all exterior potential points of entry have contacts that sense when they are open. Glass break sensors are also available and recommended. Motion sensors should not be used as the primary means of detection because they do not detect someone until they are already in the house. Fortunately there is a wide spectrum of alarm systems available today for our homes. When shopping for a home burglar alarm system, keep in mind that there are two basic types of systems to choose from. There are those that monitor the perimeter of your house and those that monitor the interior. Magnetic contacts, wire screens and wireless systems are among those that monitor the perimeter. The advantages of perimeter sensors are their ability to detect would-be intruders before they get inside; the relative low cost of the materials involved; and the unlikelihood of a false alarm ... unless you forget the system is turned on and try to open a door or window.

Some types of interior monitors are: pressure mats that are activated by footsteps; photoelectric beams that are triggered when someone walks through the path of the beam; sensors that bounce ultrasonic waves off furniture and walls; sensors that monitor a room's temperature; and microwave sensors which detect motion. Keep in mind when considering these types that the movement of a pet or the sound of a ringing telephone could accidentally set off an interior alarm system, depending on its sensitivity. Our homes are considered by many of us our safety blankets from the outside world.  They're those places we go to relax and feel untouched by the evils of society.  We want to make sure our personal spaces are secure and strong.  Alarm systems certainly aid in this comfort zone.  Having that extra bit of defense and backup against the dangers of the world makes us all relax a little more and rest a little sounder.
